Finding your timing in Bachata

Bachata is in 4/4 time - which means there are four emphasized beats in every measure. Here are some queues to help know where you are: The low bongo usually plays on the 4th beat. The voice accents the 1st beat - often that means that vocal phrases end on the first beat rather than start on it. The bass tends to play on the 3rd, 4th, and 1st beats - but this can change. Dancers usually step on beats 1,2 and 3 - stepping in place on 4 (tap). Sometimes, people will dance on different timings. Bachata is informal, it's not a ballroom dance, so the rules defining it are not rigid. See the last video on the bottom left for a step by step breakdown of bachata's most basic footwork.

It's a bit harsh to say she doesn't know what she's doing. On a very basic level, those are the steps - even if that thing where she lifts her leg up at the end is exaggerated. Yes, bachata isn't a ballroom dance, and I hope it never will be, but for people to learn, you have to teach them by breaking down the steps first. If someone knows of an instructional video which is better please let us know. Or better yet, create your own and post it to YouTube. If we find something better we'd be glad to post it. For the time being, this is the best we could find. YouTube is full of awful dance school videos which make this girl's very authentic by comparison.

I also agree with everyone... That first girl wit the accent does not know what she is doing. Also the girls in the middle, although they can dance, need to learn that bachata is not meant to do all those turns and stuff... It is meant to hold your partner close (obviously i know they are girls, but for the sake of argument go with me) and you can occasionally do a turn or two... Those other turns are meant for salsa or merengue. And aventura has modernized bachata, you can;t deny them that and some of the topics that they sing about should have been sung about way before they came. But, the greats will always remain the greats.

I AGREE THE WHITE GIRL, DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING. BUT NOT ONLY HER THERE ARE ALOT OF INSTRUCTORS THAT WILL TRY TO TEACH THE SAME WAY, THINKING THA BACHATA IS A BALLROOM DANCE.

you know aventura socks ok.if you want to talk about real bachata lets says frank reyes, antony santos, zacarias fereira, raulin rodrigez, joe veras,. and about dancing, to dance a good bachata, you got to get someone who likes the music and understand the music.
